Congrats Ram Nath Kovind for being next president of India.

Although the president post is assumed to be a rubber stamp in Indian constitution, but being the executive head of the country , being head of the armed forces and having a lot of other special powers like “pocket veto”, a president can have significant influence in day to day functioning of our country.
A significant case, I remember today is worth mentioning here. In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi goverment wanted to impose restriction on freedom of press. Gandhi wanted to pass Indian post office(Amendment) bill which could have altered the privacy of people and goverment was legally allowed to snoop on your letters. Our president, Zail Singh was under pressure to sign the bill but by using “Pocket veto” power he just kept the bill with him indefinitely and the bill was not passed, Saving our country from altered laws.
So , that’s the power of a president , even a bill passed by legislature was kept hanging forever.
Hope you be our next “kalam sir” and not “patil mam”.
All the best
